The Setup

Much like an indoor court, a basic sand volleyball court is a rectangle divided in half by a net. Each square side belongs to a team, and the idea is that each team has to keep the ball from hitting the ground on their side, or the other team scores a point.

The sand court is slightly smaller than an indoor court, and the floor is, well, sand. The smaller court is fitting because rather than a standard 6 person team, sand volleyball has only 2 players per team. A special volleyball is used as well that is lighter and softer, and more suited to the sand court.

Sand Volleyball Rules: Game Play

Gameplay for sand volleyball is pretty straightforward, so don’t let it intimidate you! A player on the starting side serves the ball over the net from behind the end line, which puts the ball into active play. The two players on each team are allowed to hit the ball 3 times before it has to go to the other side, or the other team gets a point.

In beach volleyball, a game is played to 21 points. Games are usually played in sets of three with teams needing to win 2 games to win the set. If the third game is played it is usually only played to 15 points.
